Hello Friends!
A list of the characters follows, along with some
thoughts from Stephen about each one:
Twelfth Night Characters
Here are some thoughts I have about each character. These descriptions are solely meant to share
my current thinking – not to create fixed molds for each character.
VIOLA – empathic, kind, passionate, grieving, poetic
soul, quick thinker, identical twin of SEBASTIAN (but they don’t need to
literally look alike)
OLIVIA – unhappy, the responsible one, in a serious
funk, emptied out, fashionable, a romantic waiting to be awakened
ORSINO – privileged, driven, double-downer, stuck,
really REALLY rich, impulsive, depressive
TOBY – frat, addict, broke, self-destructive, Van
Halen fan, a lot of fun to be around
ANDREW – odd, awkward, lost, easily influenced, sweet,
lonely, possibly loves tiny kittens
MARIA – extremely clever, flirty, opportunist, very
alive, fantastic multi-tasker
FABIAN – scrappy, great laugh, up for anything, would
be cast in a Judd Apatow movie, possibly uses recreational drugs
MALVOLIO – traditional, conservative, intelligent,
rule-follower, alone, judgmental, not afraid to lay down the law, ambitious
FESTE – apart, ridiculous, seer, hungry,
musical/singer, drifter, wise, has seen more of the world than anyone
SEBASTIAN – in the moment, solid, wounded – identical
twin of VIOLA (but they don’t need to literally look alike)
ANTONIO – deeply in love, noble, loyal, soldier
Sea Captain – your basic sea captain, a good egg
Valentine – works for Orsino – and it’s a tough job
Curio - works for Orsino – and it’s a tough job
Priest – about 143 years old
Officers – your standard cops
